Here are the four main types of HVAC units:
Split System for Heating and Air Conditioning
This is the most popular heating and air conditioning system for homeowners. It is called a split system because it features an indoor unit with the evaporator coil and blower and an outdoor unit that contains the condenser and compressor. Refrigerant lines transfer coolant between the indoor and outdoor units and circulate cool air throughout your home through the use of ducts. The heater portion of the split system is usually inside the home and uses gas for heating.
Heat Pump Hybrid System
A heat pump can work to heat or cool your home by transferring heat between the indoors and outdoors. This type of HVAC unit transfers heat from the air outside into your home and also works as an air conditioning system. You will usually need a furnace as well when temperatures get cooler, as the pump on its own is less effective below 40 °F. However, the fact that this system uses one pump for heating and cooling makes it one of the best options for seasonal energy efficiency.
Mini-Split (Ductless)
If ducts are not a good fit for your living space, then you may choose a mini-split system, also known as a ductless system. A ductless HVAC unit works similarly to a split system with an indoor and outdoor unit, but instead of circulating air through ducts, the indoor portion blows air directly into a room. This means that each area of your home that you want to be temperature-controlled will need to have a separate mini-split system. HVAC installation costs are higher for this type of unit, but it works well if you want more control over each individual room in your home.
Packaged HVAC Unit
Unlike split HVAC units, a packaged system has all the necessary HVAC equipment in one unit, which is usually kept indoors. This is the rarest type of system, but it does have its benefits. You may prefer this option if you have a small home or office space that does not have room for multiple units. The heating system is not as powerful for this type of HVAC unit, but the cooling system is fairly efficient and easy to maintain.
